Blue Ravine by John McClanahan, 2020

An original gouache on paper by Texas artist John McClanahan, Blue Ravine captures the artist’s expressive approach to landscape through layers of color, texture, and gestural mark-making. Soft earth tones are punctuated by vibrant blues, reds, and ochres, creating an abstracted landscape that reveals more the longer you look.

The 14" x 14" work is beautifully custom framed, with a generous ivory mat and an antiqued gold frame featuring a subtle woven detail. The traditional warmth of the frame provides a striking contrast to McClanahan’s more contemporary, expressive composition and gives the piece a polished, collected feel. At 22½" x 16½" framed, it arrives ready to hang and works beautifully on its own or incorporated into a layered gallery wall.

McClanahan’s career spans more than seven decades, with his work exhibited in more than 200 regional and national exhibitions. A longtime Texas artist and educator, he served for many years as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Baylor University.
